Hegemony Poem

She wanted to be an eagle in the plain sky, but there was always a wind that brought her back down

She jumped in and out the water but he always stayed still

She flew like a rose pedal but he was always the wall that stopped her

She decided to keep on going and became INDEPENDENT.

PWA Writing

Would you ever resist being called a slave and being treated unfair? In the book ''Kindred'' the author writes about a character named Dana who goes back to a time of slavery, to save a kid named Rufus. Since Dana was black she was affected by slavery. Octavia Butler's main point in the story is that slavery is very oppressive and we have to transform it.
Slavery is very oppressive in so many different ways. For examplein ''Kindred'' there is a guy who is a slave owner and he sells the slave kids. I believe that is unfair and it also shows econoic exploitation. " I turned to the place were I had been strung up and whipped-and jumped back in surprise when I saw someone hanging there. Hanging by the neck. A women. Alice". This quotte from the book prooves that the slave owner had sold Alice's children. Alice, the character felt so bad that she hung herself. In my point of view I believe that economic exploitation is not good because you are taking advantage of someone or something just for their money. A connection I have with this is here in Oakland. For example, prostitutes, they sell their bodies to get money, that's a form of economic exploitation. Again, this is just one of the many ways slavery is oppressive.
Would you resist being called a slave when you are normally accustomed to live free and have rights? Dana, the main character from "Kindred" had to pretend she was her own husband's slave. For them two it was very difficult to live a life like that because if people found out they were married slave owners would punish them. They would have punished them because in that time black and white marriage was not allowed. '' I had been at home for eight days when the dizziness came again. I didn't know whether to curse it for my own sake or welcome it for Kevin's- not that it muttered what I did.'' This quote analyzes how Dana didnt want her husband in Rufus's time because she did'nt want him to get hurt. Also I believe this quote is showing she dosen't want to be in a time were they can't be together. A connection I have with this was when I was a little girl I was accostumed to get everything I wanted but as I grew older I had to get used to getting good grades to get things I wanted. This reminds me of Dana's situation because she had to get accostumed to the slave life.
Slavery made people do many dangerous things. For example, in the novel "Kindred" a character was deeply being affected by slavery, so she decided to run away. This was a very bad decision the character made because the slave owners caught her instantly. " No don't go, you don't know what you're doing". This quote is telling that the character was planning to escape, but Dana thought it was dangerous. Slavery can lead people to do many dangerous choices that can lead to bad conclusions.
In my opinion slavery is a form of oppression and it can hurt many people emotionally or physically. Something we could've done before to stop slavery was make a group and protest. Or, they could've escaped and go to another country. One suggestion I would give is to always fight for your rights.

College For All Essay (:

Hello my name is Alondra Ochoa and I am very excited to follow my dreams. I come from a family that is loving and supportive. My parents expect me to go to college and experience what it is like. They want me to have a good future, and that begins in college. The community where I come from is violent, and that has helped me be more courageous. My community is violent because of all the gangs and killing. Some opportunities that have been available to me in my school and community is being able to go visit different colleges. This has been a good experience because I get to see what a real college is like and get a view at what college I want to go to. An another opportunity I have been able to experience is when me and my soccer team were able to help clean our community for part of the day. This was a really good experience because it helped me understand that if we all work together as a team we can help our community. When you help your community it feels good because you know your doing something right.

One major issue that is confronting my community is gangs. This has been a major issue because it is a barrier for regular people in our community. Gangs can be described as a barrier because it makes the community more violent and people get scared to go out in the streets. It can also be a barrier because gang members use many weapons and that might injure someone very badly. Some gang members also smoke a lot, such as marijuana, and that causes health problems. Even though I have had may barriers throughout my life my dream will always stay the same. My dream is to go to college and I will  never give up on that no matter where life takes me. I will go through anything just to make my dreams come true because I would be making my family members proud and mostly I will be making myself proud. Some of the things I do to keep on persevering is to not get in many trouble and find the bright side in things. I also try to keep up with my good grades and focus mainly on my education. Something I try to do to keep myself from the violence in my community is to ignore it and keep my mind on what i want to do in life. I always try to make the best out of things even when they get hard.
If I go to college I will have an amazing future. It would be good for me to go to college because I would be able to manage my own life and have my own money. I will also have many knowledge, and I’m going to be able to pass my knowledge to others.Gong to college would be a huge accomplishment to me. It would be an accomplishment because I will be one of the few people in my family who are attending to college. Unfortunately, some of my family members have no hope on me in my dream of going to college. So, me going to college will prove those people wrong because if I work hard on something I want to do in my life I know I can accomplish it! I really hope on going to college.

Expo Oppression Journal

My expo group is mainly focusing on violence. Our main focus is to see how violence is affecting people's life, what type of oppression are they facing and what can we do to stop or prevent violence. We strongly disagree with any type of violence. My expo group hopes to change other person's opinions in their thought about violence.
Someone who may be called an oppressor is a thief. This person would be harmful and oppressive because he/she is taking things away without permission, and it does not belong to them. It may harm  many people. Anybody can be a victim in this situation. Some prescriptions thieves might say are things such as ,"Robbing makes life easier." Something they have internalized is thinking they can anything they want, without permission, and that is wrong. The thieves system is a barrier to other people because it makes people afraid to get robbed at any time.
A group of people i know that are oppressors are gang members. A gang contributes to harm people who are in other different gangs. Also, for example, if one time a person who is in a gang shoots at someone thinking it's from a different gang, and that person really isn't related to that, it would be really horrifying. They have internalized that killing , harming, and smoking is good for them. The gang system restricts people's lives because they feel afraid of coming out to their own neighborhood just because of gangs.
This type of oppression makes people feel unsafe. Some people might react with more violence. But in the other hand, some people might act calm about a bad situation. Some beliefs they may have internalized is violence. Such as being the same as the oppressor.

My Speech

My Speech

Allow me to introduce myself, I am a slave. My life has not been easy because my master makes me work from morning to night. I suffered a lot, many slaves got sent in big ships to work for white people. The conditions in the ship were horrible, it was dirty and everybody was piled up. There was also many people infected by a disease that came from rats. They didn’t feed us enough and we were in there for a long period of time with no bathroom. I a, also very worried because my master can send me to South Carolina or wherever they wanted to. They would separate me away from my family. Masters are also very unfair to me and to the rest of the slaves. They are unfair because they treat white slaves better. My contributions to the founding of this country include to free all slaves and to have the same rights as other people. I contributed by fighting for my own rights. In my opinion the compromise was good. It was good because slaves were also counted. It is my belief that the end of slave trade in 1808 was a very good decision because they tried really hard to free slaves. From my point of view, The Fugitive Slave Clause was both bad and good. It was good because we tried to get our liberty, but it was bad because many slaves got caught. In my opinion, free and enslaved African Americans should be allowed to vote. This is my opinion because we are the ones that have struggled and suffered throughout our lives. So now, you understand that for me freedom is very important, it shows a sign of liberty and independence.
